Big weekend for Bisons and alumni

It's a huge weekend for the Brantford Bisons.

While present-day players get to show off their stuff at the OVFLeague Prospects Game on Saturday, three Bisons alumni will be inducted into the OVFL's Hall of Fame.

"I am honoured to receive such an award," said Rob Pikula, one of three former Bisons to be inducted.

"Football has been a big part of my life for many years, and it began with the Brantford Bisons."

Pikula, a retired CFLer, along with former Bisons president Don MacDonald, former coach Dan Padmore will be inducted on Saturday in Waterloo.

"It is a real honour to be recognized by the OVFL," MacDonald said.

"I got involved in football because I wanted to contribute to something that was so good for my son. I guess this is one more example of the positive effect my son has had on my life."

Padmore said he got into football because he loves the game.

"I wanted my two boys to feel the same thing I did when I played," MacDonald said. "I believe it worked because my youngest son is going on to play university ball."

MacDonald said he started coaching because he wanted to help get kids off the street.

"So, I thought I could make a difference and try to be that mentor, so far so good, I think," he said.

The Hall of Fame ceremony will be part of the Prospects Game that takes place at Wilfrid Laurier University at 3 p.m.

Grass Roots

It was a chance for Brantford football players to put themselves on the radar of college coaches.

On Saturday, 55 players from Brantford, Hamilton and Woodstock took part in a football combine at the Brantford City Soccer Club's indoor facility on Morton Avenue.

"This was a great opportunity for our players to showcase their skills," Brantford Bisons president Brad Ward said. "And by the reaction from the players and their parents, this was a real success."

In an effort to expose more local players to university coaches, the Bisons teamed up with Toronto firm Grassroots Prospects to provide the players with a pro-style combine, featuring the 40-yard dash, vertical jump, broad jump and the 5-10-5 shuffle.

BDFC ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2012 FALL SEASON HEAD COACHING POSITIONS

The Brant and District Football Club are now accepting applications for Head Coaching positions in preparation for the Bisons Football Program’s 2012 SOFAL fall season.

Interested candidates should send their applications via e-mail to the BDFC’s VP Communications at secretary@brantfordbisons.com

Or write to:

BRANT & DISTRICT FOOTBALL CLUB
